Part 10
Florida, Here We Come - By Coach Dick Conner

In the days following the Mr. Indiana contest, Dick Conner loaded up Dan Franklin, Joe Bradley, and Hans Braukhof, and headed south to Deland, Florida.
“As always, I needed the company of someone who was more level-headed than me. Before I write anything else, let me explain what I believe about weightlifters in general. In my opinion, the people who love lifting are on the average very compulsive, not always, but more so than the average person. As I look back, all three of the guys with me were my friends. But as I soon found out, being in any kind of business together is always trouble. I was in charge, but not on paper.
“We arrived in Florida at what was then a small building that housed the Nautilus business, which belonged to Arthur Jones and a few other people. One of which was Kim Wood, who became the first professional football strength coach. Dan Franklin and I walked in and saw a man speaking on the phone, and it was Arthur Jones. Jones looked at us and said, ‘If you want to talk to me, go out and get in that Cadillac and I will be out in a few minutes.’"
“So out we go. Into the Cadillac.”
“Arthur came out, got in the car, and we went off to the races. He began to talk, and we listened to him, as he was without a doubt the best at holding your attention than any person I’d ever met. The ride was informative to say the least, and one topic was to discuss purchasing Nautilus machines. It meant you had to put 50% of the price down, and when your machines were ready you would be called to pick up the order. So we, (mostly all me), put down 50% and headed back to Evansville.
“Nobody was buying these machines and they were rather expensive. The equipment was advertised in Iron Man magazine which was owned by a very honest man, and Arthur Jones was a great salesman, so I put money down (around $2,500) on a hip and back machine, the pulldown, a pullover machine, and a leg extension.
“All of this went occurred as America was experiencing race riots and a war in Vietnam. I was a cop with two very young daughters, and a brand-new house. My car was alright, I thought, but lo and behold, it broke down as the time was near to travel to Florida and pick up the new Nautilus machines.
“I soon received a call from Arthur Jones himself. He stated I had better come and get the machines. Well, thankfully it worked out because my brother-in-law was a car mechanic and he got my vehicle on the road.
“I headed for Florida, again with Dan Franklin and as I recall, Hans Braukhof. In Florida I rented a trailer, loaded the machines, and began the trip back to Evansville. Upon returning home, with little or no rest, I made decisions like that of a maniac. I announced to everyone that we were going to put the machines in my basement. Not after a night’s rest, but at that very moment…so we went to work and work it was.
“Two distinct memories I have of this event. Number one: the torso arm machine was too tall and it was a battle getting it down into the basement; and I remember we tore a hole in the wall on the way down. Number two: I was told by Jones that it would fit in the basement, as he stated to me, ‘all the factors had been considered’.
“Well, they had not. The machine was too tall for the basement ceiling. Of course, the only logical thing to do was bust a hole in the basement floor of a home that was about four years old.
“I took a hammer and broke through the floor, secured bolts in poured concrete to hold the machine, then lowered the machine down into the hole and bolted it down.
“We were set to go now with some Nautilus machines. At the time I thought this would be a good leg workout, however, in retrospect, it’s clear that the program would kill a male gorilla.
