Las Vegas USPA Meet
Pit Viper Results USPA Las Vegas

The Pit Power Team sent 8 lifters to compete in one of the largest drug-tested meets in the country. Over 800 lifters competed over a course of five days to determine the National Champions in each class. This event was sponsored by the United States Powerlifting Association (USPA) and held in the ballrooms at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, NV. All lifters had to have a classification of Class 1 to be able to register for the meet. In other words, there are no “average” lifters in this meet.
The event venue was very impressive. The meet director did a very good job with the presentation. The warmup area was held in a separate ballroom that was connected to a backstage area. When called, lifters entered the platform through an entry for that specific platform. The biggest challenge that our lifters had to overcome was the inconsistent judging. In the end, it had little effect on our lifter outcomes, but it did create some level of frustration. I do believe the judging worked in our favor as our lifters are well prepared and coached and were able to make adjustments more effectively than many other lifters.
Please help us congratulate all of our outstanding lifters!
Mike Stagg - Day 2 - 165lbs - Master - Full Power
Mike Stagg was our first lifter to take the platform. He completed a solid 402lb squat opener and jumped to 418lbs. Stagg completed the lift of 418lbs but the judges turned the lift down. The lift was then completed a second time. However, the judges were still not happy with the depth.
Mike went 3 for 3 in the bench press getting white lights on each lift and finishing with 319lbs on his final attempt. His bench press established a new Indiana State Record for the USPA in the Masters class.
Going into the deadlift, Stagg’s main objective in this meet was a 1223lb total to break the existing Master World Record total. This was going to require a 501lb deadlift which Mike had not lifted since the mid 90s. After opening with a solid 474lbs, we decided to go straight to 501 as the win was locked up and there was no real point in doing any other amount. Stagg completed the pull and locked in a new World Record Deadlift (501lb) and World Record Total (1223lbs) in the USPA Master class.
Jacob Wallace - Day 3 - 181lbs - Open - Full Power
Jacob lifted in the open class, which is by far the most difficult class to win. He had approximately 75 lifters in his class. For those that know Jacob, he is a very calm lifter with a well thought out plan. However, the judges immediately served notice by giving him a single red light for “soft knees,” at the end of his opening squat. Jacob completed his second lift and then jumped to 507lbs for his third. He wanted to leave no doubt and went extremely low with 507lbs standing up with it effortlessly. He did receive a single red light but we never asked what for since the lift was good.
His bench press was strong so we convinced him on his third lift to stretch beyond his plan and try to improve his position. We called for 380lbs. This is the highest bodyweight bench press (raw) in Pit history at 2.1x bodyweight. This was one of the most impressive lifts I have seen. I encourage everyone to watch this video on our facebook feed. You can hardly even see the bar move. From the time he got the press command to lockout, it seemed as though the bar was not even moving. This was an incredible effort and was EXACTLY the right call.
Moving onto the deadlift, Jacob was once again received a single red light for “soft knees”. Despite that we called for 589lbs on his second attempt which was strong and good (although he received a red light again….we never asked what for). Jacob attempted 606lbs for a new Pit record on his third. The strength appeared to be there, however, his grip wasn’t and the bar came out of his hands.
Jacob finished in 6th place overall with a 1477lb total. Jacob had an excellent day completing 8 of 9 attempts on the day.
Larry Ulrich - Day 3 - 198lbs - Master - Bench Press only
Larry needed to have a good day as he had the Masters world record holder in his class. Larry did not get off to a great start. There were some miscommunications and the end result was that Larry did not hear his name and his opening attempt timed out.
On his second attempt he completed his opening lift very easily. Prior to turning in his third attempt we asked if Larry could change afterwards as he was only competing in the “single event”. The idea being that we wanted to have a look at the top competition in his class and did not wish to lift more than necessary for the win. We were told that we could change it (by an international judge working the platform). With that answer we turned in 303lbs for his final attempt.
His top competitor completed a 314lb lift for his second attempt. We then walked up to change Larry’s 3rd attempt to 319lbs. However, the table told us that we could not do that. There was some debate regarding the wording in the rulebook. The end result was that they did not allow the attempt to be changed. In fairness, the IPL referee apologized as he was sure we were allowed to change it and was not aware of the rule change.
We do not know if Larry would have completed the 319lbs or if his top competitor would have called for a different amount had Larry lifted 319lbs. We will never know but we sure would have liked the opportunity to find out. Larry finished in second place with his 303lb lift. This lift was very strong and I am confident he had as much as 330lbs that day! Nonetheless, his 303lb lift was a new Indiana State Record for master lifters.
Anthony Burrus - Day 4 - 220lbs - Open Full Power
After watching judging for a couple of days being inconsistent, Anthony was understandably nervous and wanted to be sure he had clean lifts on his opening squat. Anthony ended up having very consistent judging which was not a factor, other than causing him some undue stress. He took a somewhat conservative squat on his third attempt of 545lbs and completed it very easily. In retrospect, we should have gone a little higher but 3 for 3 is a good day so we will take it.
Anthony opened his bench a 340lbs and it moved very easily. His second attempt of 370lbs turned out to be just a bit much, missing it on both his 2nd and 3rd attempts.
His deadlifts proved to be just as strong as his squats. Anthony finished with a 600lb pull. His final total on 7 of 9 good attempts was 1485lbs. In a pool of 75 lifters, Anthony finished in 8th place.
Bruce Thomas - Day 4 - 220lbs - Master Deadlift Only
Bruce was worried about a hip injury coming into this meet and wanted to be conservative. Bruce is an accomplished lifter and it was apparent after his opener that a conservative second attempt would eliminate his competitors from any shot at winning. We turned in a 540lb second attempt and Bruce pulled it very easily for the win. We did try a 580lb third attempt but Bruce did not give it a full effort, concerned about aggravating his hip for no reason. He finished in first place.
David Petrie - Day 4 - 220lbs - Master Deadlift Only
David was our oldest competitor at 67yrs of age. David was a late addition to the meet. He did not register initially as he had a slight tear of a knee tendon. Once the doctor cleared him, he spent a couple of weeks on the waitlist before a spot opened and allowed him to register. David was also very nervous over the judging. We told him to relax and just focus on lifting weight. He also said he did not even want to know the weight and for us to just call for whatever we thought he could do. David made the most of his opportunity by pulling a new personal record of 402lbs which was good enough for first place in his Master category.
Derrick Hill - Day 5 - 308lbs - Master Full Power
While I hate to come back to inconsistent judging, it affected Derrick more than anyone else. Derrick’s main competitor seemed to avoid the inconsistencies while they seemed to plague Derrick.
Derrick squatted a strong 474lbs but this had him 33lbs out of first place. We felt like we could make up the difference but it was clear that Derrick was going to have to show up and perform.
Derrick had the advantage on the Bench Press so we tried to exploit it as much as possible. Derrick managed a 363lb bench which made up the 33lb deficit and actually gave him a 29lb advantage.
Derrick only needed to complete a couple of solid lifts in his deadlift. His opener was very easy (despite a red light for “soft knees”). His second lift which would secure his win was turned down 2-1 for, you guessed it, “soft knees”. As it turned out, this lift was not necessary for the win but that was not understood at that point. We called for 560lbs and Derrick walked out and left no doubt with his intentional flexing of his quads at the top to be sure his knees were clearly locked. The lift received 3 white lights, a 1396lb total and a 70lb victory.
Hanz Hoag - Day 5 - 308lbs - Master - Single Ply Bench Press Only
Hanz opened with a very easy 303lbs to get on the board. After the lift, he put on his bench press shirt and jumped to 390lbs. The lift was a clear miss as he struggled to get the weight down to his chest. It was clear he needed more weight so we called for 429lbs on his third lift. He easily lifted the weight for a new World Record in his category and, of course, first place.
Summary
