Sixteen lifters from The Pit Barbell Club competed in the 2023 ADFPF Full Power Nationals held on August 5 at the JFK center in Henderson, KY. We had many lifters who experienced their first National meet and several lifters qualified for the WDFPF World Full Power Championships to be held in England this November. All of our lifters did outstanding and The Pit took home 2 of the Best Overall Lifter awards. Men’s Overall Best Lifter went to Jason St. Clair while the Best Overall Female Master Lifter award went to Carolyn Beck.
44kg (97 lb) Female Class
Cherish Anderson, 18 years of age, lifted in her first National level meet and made a tremendous debut. All of her lifts were State/National and American records while her deadlift was a World Record for her weight and age group. Her deadlift was 220lb with a bodyweight of 93.5lbs. That is 2.35x bodyweight which makes that the highest pound-for-pound female deadlift in Pit Barbell Club History. Her squat was 132lbs, bench press was 66lbs and her total was 418lbs. All of these lifts were also Pit Legend Board records. Cherish will be headed to college in the next couple of weeks but I am sure we will see more of her!
53kg (116lbs) Female Class
This was Erin Vincent’s second meet. Erin struggled a little with the commands and missed a couple of completed lifts for beating the referee signals. Despite that, she set new National Meet Records as well as 3 new Pit Legend board lifts. Erin finished in first place overall with a 143lb squat, 99lb bench press, 181lb deadlift and 423lb total.
80 kg (176lbs) Female Class
Carolyn Beck established new state records in the squat and the total en route to winning the Best Overall Female Master lifter of the meet. Carolyn had a near miss on her fourth bench press attempt that would have been a new Master world record. Carolyn finished with a squat of 209lbs, bench press of 137.5lbs, deadlift of 242lbs and a total of 588lbs.
90kg (198lbs) Female Class
Robin Rogan recently began training at The Pit 2 location and her lifts have been going up since. She had her best meet to date and set new State/National/American records in the Squat, deadlift and total. She squatted 264lbs, bench pressed 99lbs, deadlifted 342lbs, and totaled 704lbs. These same lifts also broke the existing Legend board records!
90+kg Female Class
The Pit had two women entered in this class. Rachel Mayes entered her first full power meet and really put on a show. Rachel is 60 yrs of age and gets stronger every time she lifts. She broke the State, National, and American Master records for her squat of 105lbs, bench press of 99lbs, and total of 451lbs. Her deadlift of 248lbs was a state record. Rachel just recently started squatting so I am sure these numbers will increase by her next meet.
Haley Reason was the overall class winner in 90+. Haley is very fun to coach and has an infectious attitude and personality. She works as hard as anyone I have trained and her lifts continue to reflect her drive for improvement. Haley had personal bests in each lift. Squat PR of 248lbs, bench press of 148lbs, deadlift of 253lbs and total of 650lbs.
Our female lifters have been showing out in force. I will attest that their work ethic will match anyone in the gym (don’t believe me then come train with them)! Our youngest lifter was 18yrs of age and our oldest is 61 yrs of age (and she was named Best Lifter)! Congratulations to the Ladies of the Pit Barbell Club.
STRONG IS BEAUTIFUL!!
52kg (114lbs) Men’s Class
John Jaranowski competed in his second ADFPF meet. John is still growing into the class as he only weighed in at 88lbs. John squatted 159lbs, he bench pressed an easy 71lbs, and deadlifted a very impressive 204lbs for a 435lb total.
67.5kg (148lbs) Men’s Class
The 148lb class saw a pair of Pit lifters going head-to-head in their first meet. When the dust settled Jorge Ramos took first with Luke Jolito coming in second. Jorge’s lifts were as follows: Squat 281lbs, Bench Press 148lbs, Deadlift 314lbs, and total of 742lbs. Luke Jolito finished with lifts of: Squat 220lbs, Bench Press 154lbs, deadlift 292lbs and total of 665lbs. Luke finished 8 for 9 on his attempts while Jorge went a perfect 9 for 9 on attempts.
75kg (165lbs) Men’s Class
In the 165lb class, Mike Stagg won with State/National/American record lifts in the Squat, Deadlift and Total. Stagg squatted 391lbs, bench pressed 308lbs, deadlift 479lbs and totaled 1180lbs.
82.5kg (181lbs) Men’s Class
Zach Collins decided to enter not having properly trained. However, Zach easily won the class and made some large jumps in an attempt to set some new gym records. Twice, Zach had 606lbs in the deadlift almost locked out before his grip gave out. I am sure that lift will come in the next meet. Zach squatted 474lbs, bench pressed 308lbs, deadlift 551lbs for a total of 1333lbs.
Avin Seymore competed in the teenage class. Avin has made a lot of progress since he did his first meet about one year ago. Avin went 3 for 3 on squats ending with 380lbs. He bench pressed 231lbs and then went 3 for 3 in deadlift, ending with 1072lb total which was the top bodyweight teenage total in the meet.
90kg (198lbs) Men’s Class
Jason St. Clair decided to cut from 220lbs to compete at 198lbs. This move made a lot of 220lb lifter’s happy! Jason squatted a new WORLD RECORD of 600lbs. He bench pressed a new state record of 374lbs. His deadlift of 572lbs resulted in a new state record total of 1545lbs. To cap off his day, Jason received the best overall Men’s lifter award for the meet!
100kg (220lbs) Men’s Class
Jeff Evans won the Master class at 220lbs going a perfect 9 for 9 on his lifts. His squat of 308lbs established a new Indiana Master record for his age group. He bench pressed 203lbs and deadlifted 402lbs for a new personal best total of 913lbs.
110kg (242lbs) Men’s Class
Alex Gries aka….”Thing 1” lifted in the Junior class. Alex squatted 380lbs, bench pressed 248lbs and deadlifted 402lbs for a total of 1028lbs. These lifts were all personal bests for Alex. I see him train consistently at the Heidelbach location and his improvement from week to week is impressive. I expect we will see his lifts continue to go up for some time.
125kg (275lbs) Men’s Class
Jasonson Robards…aka “Thing 2” lifted unopposed in his first meet as a Junior lifter. Jackson has the potential to be a great lifter. I believe he is just scratching the surface of his strength potential. Jackson has also been training at Heidelbach and improves his lifts, and technique, every week. Jackson squatted 418lbs, bench pressed 259lbs, deadlifted 507lbs for a total of 1182lbs.
145kg (308lbs) Men’s Class
Adam Rice decided he did not feel like cutting. As a result, he was light for this class. However, his strength gains more than made up for it. It has been a minute, since anyone at The Pit competed in a meet with Jason St. Clair and ended with a higher total. Adam did that on Saturday. Adam squatted an easy 523lbs. Adam has been going easy on squats as he had a minor knee injury. He bench pressed 429lbs. For two years his goal has been 402lbs. Adam needs a new goal. He deadlifted 600lbs with a near miss of 670lbs. This gave him a total of 1551lbs.
I want to congratulate all of our lifters who competed in this meet. The judging is strict and it can be a very intimidating experience to lift in front of people at this level. Our gym continues to attract the very best drug-free lifters and we have no intention of slowing down. Adam and Erin have applied to the ADFPF to lift in the WDFPF World Championships in England and we wish them the best as they prepare for their next adventure. The Pit is planning a meet in December and several meets in 2024. We hope to see everyone on the platform. Finally, congratulations to Jacob Wallace for testing and certifying as an ADFPF National level judge. Thank you to Caroline Fardig who brilliantly sang the national anthem prior to competition, and she also emceed the entire event. We also greatly appreciated the time and talents of Derrick Hill, Jacob Stagg, Lanea Stagg, Mary Merrill, Diane Northington, and Sarah St. Clair for their help during the day. Last, but not least, we appreciated the facility where Pit man Bruce Thomas manages, and he provided the excellent loaders and spotters. See you in December!
