In a Powerlifting USA article, Dick Conner made a bold claim. "There is not a drug free team made up of members from one gym that can beat The Pit". The blowback was immediate as a team in New York felt that this was a "stupid" comment and challenged Coach Conner to "walk the talk" and come beat them. Our 3rd team to be inducted into the Hall of Fame for 2025 is the 1987 National Champion Teenage team. The 1987 APF Nationals were hosted by the US Army in Ft. Knox, KY. This is likely the best teenage team from top to bottom that Coach Connor ever assembled. For the first time, the Pit produced multiple National Champions in one meet: Mike Stagg became the first Pit lifter to win multiple National Titles (his first coming in 1984), Pat Boarman won his first of multiple National Titles (along with two Collegiate Titles), Eric Gill, Jim Stratman (who would go on to play football at Ball State), Pat Bone, David Boyd and “Big” Bill Cook also captured National titles in Ft. Knox. After the meet the US Army asked if Mike Stagg and Pat Boarman would travel with and lift for the US Army in the ADFPA Drug Tested Teenage Nationals. Mike and Pat were the only champions on the US Army team in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and anchored the US Army to capture the ADFPA Teenage Title.
Mike Stagg and Jim Stratman (along with Coach Conner) can still be found working out regularly at the Pit. This would be the last Teenage National Title that the Pit would capture until 2025 (more on that soon). ... See MoreSee Less
